SAVE THE DATE: 3rd webinar on Biological Control on April 15th, 3 p.m. CEST
Bioherbicides: Applications, Prospects, and Limitations
Speaker: Maurizio Vurro, CNR Bari (Italy)
Online on April 15th, 2026 at 15.00 CES
Natural compounds and microorganisms currently play a minor role in weed management, and only a few products have reached the market due to limitations such as high production costs, lower efficacy, limited persistence, and difficulties in targeting weeds.
Nevertheless, increasing demand for organic products, restrictions on hazardous herbicides, and the rising costs of developing new synthetic active ingredients are renewing interest in natural alternatives. Recent advances in technologies, equipment, and biotechnology are also improving the discovery, production, delivery, and risk assessment of biocontrol agents and natural compounds. In addition, innovative approaches proposed by new spin off companies show promising potential.
This presentation will provide an overview of natural compounds and microorganisms used for weed control, highlighting current limits and future perspectives.
