Webinar
“Parasitic Weeds: know the enemy to combat it”

June 29th, 2021

We are happy to announce an International Webinar entitled "Parasitic Weeds: know the enemy to combat it". This international event, jointly organized by CREA-OF and CNR-ISPA, with the support of the BIOTECH project (Mipaaf) and the sponsorship of the European Weed Research Society (EWRS) - Working Group “Parasitic Weed”, will be held on 29 June 2021, from 09:00 to 12:30 CET.

The main aim of the webinar is to cover the research area on parasitic weeds, which represent a very serious and often underestimated problem in many countries all over the world, being responsible for serious qualitative and quantitative damages to numerous crops.

The webinar will consist in four lectures held by eminent and internationally renowned experts who will cover various topics concerning parasitic plants, such as strigolactones, physiology, biology and management, interactions with the host, genetics improvement, and crop resistance.
This is the programme of the morning webinar, the invited speakers and the title of their speeches:

09.00 - 09:10 Webinar Organizers Welcome Introduction
09.10 - 09:50 Prof. Koichi Yoneyama Strigolactones as germination stimulants for root parasitic weeds
09.50 - 10:30 Prof. Harro Bowmeester The role of chemical communication in parasitic plant infection and its prevention
10:30 - 11:10 Prof. Julie Scholes Identification of resistance genes for smart breeding of durable defence against Striga hermonthica
11.10 - 11:50 Prof. Hanan Eizenberg The use of multi-spectral sensors and modeling approach for early broomrape detection and management
11:50 -12:30                                  Participants Discussion Concluding remarks

Each lecture (30 minutes) will be followed by questions posed to the speakers from the audience. A wider discussion on the subject will be organized at the end of the presentations.

In the afternoon of the same day, June 29, from 14:00 to 17:00 we plan to have a second part of the webinar, with short reports (10 minutes each) presented by Italian colleagues actively engaged in research on parasitic plants, which will show ongoing studies and results achieved, followed by a debate with questions posed to the speakers by the listeners. The main purpose of this second event is to create a small national network that allows increasing the knowledge and the possibilities of collaboration. Indeed, parasitic plants, in addition to being a fascinating and still partially unexplored field of research, represent a very serious and often underestimated problem for the Italian agriculture, as they are responsible for serious qualitative and quantitative damage to numerous crops, in particular vegetables and leguminous plants. The afternoon presentations will be in Italian, with slides in English, the attendance to this second part will follow the same registration procedure used to attend the morning session. The programme of the afternoon session will be circulated in the near future.
The event is completely free, but registration is mandatory by clicking the link below and filling the form.
