Great opportunity for students and young researchers - apply now!
The EWRS Working Group on "Education & Training" is pleased to offer a one-day training course on the skills and strategies for writing and publishing a scientific paper. This session will take place on June 30th, 2025, the day before the 20th Symposium of the European Weed Research Society, which will be held in Lleida, Spain, from July 1st to 4th, 2025. The course is designed to provide valuable insights and practical guidance for researchers looking to enhance their scientific writing and publication skills.
The lecturer on the course will be Dr Dana MacGregor from Rothamsted Research (UK) and is designed for students, PhD candidates, and postdocs actively involved in research within weed science and related disciplines. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the process of writing and publishing scientific papers.
The course will combine with practical writing exercises, as well as personalized coaching and peer-to-peer learning in small groups. To fully benefit from the course, participants are encouraged to bring a piece of their own writing—such as an abstract, project summary, or a section of a paper—that they wish to refine using the skills and techniques taught.
Please ensure the material you bring is not confidential, and be prepared with the tools you need (e.g., pen and paper or a laptop) to actively revise and improve your work.
More specifically, the focus of the course will be on:
- Why and where to publish your work – Understanding the importance of selecting the right journal for your research and the impact of publication choices on your academic career.
- How to structure and write your scientific paper – Practical guidance on organizing your research into a clear, concise, and logically structured manuscript.
- How to craft a compelling storyline – Techniques for developing an engaging narrative that increases the likelihood of journal acceptance, ensures smooth peer review, and captures the interest of your readers.
- Putting learning into practice – Apply what you have learned through interactive small-group or individual writing exercises, designed to help refine your skills in real time.
Beyond enhancing your scientific writing abilities, this course also provides a unique opportunity to build connections with fellow early-career scientists, fostering collaboration and expanding your professional network.
