21st EWRS Symposium Uppsala, Sweden
System-Based Solutions to Sustainable Weed Management
Uppsala, Sweden, 28th of June to 2nd of July 2027
First Circular
Dear colleagues,
The European Weed Research Society is pleased to announce that the 21st EWRS Symposium will take place from 28 June to 2 July 2027 in Uppsala, Sweden, organized by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).
Fifty years have passed since the EWRS Symposium was last held in Uppsala in 1977. As we celebrate this, we reflect on five decades of collaborative weed science while looking ahead to the challenges and opportunities that lie before us.
The theme of this symposium, “System-Based Solutions to Sustainable Weed Management”, reflects this integrated vision. It highlights the fusion of ecological knowledge and modern technology in developing weed management practices that are environmentally sound, economically viable, and socially responsible. This systems-based approach draws on deep understanding of weed biology and ecology, and is supported by innovations across all sectors, from precision technologies to novel management strategies.
The symposium will bring together researchers, industry partners, practitioners, and policymakers from across Europe and beyond to share the latest scientific advances and explore collaborative pathways towards
sustainable weed management. Together, we will examine how integrated approaches can support farmers in managing the ecological complexity of their fields.
Uppsala is a historic university town and the place where Carl von Linné, the father of modern taxonomy, worked. Uppsala offers a unique combination of academic heritage, modern infrastructure, and easy international access, making it an ideal setting for scientific exchange and networking. The city offers excellent connections, located just 40 minutes by train from Stockholm and just 20 minutes from Stockholm Arlanda International Airport.
The symposium will be held at SLU Campus Ultuna, featuring modern conference facilities in a beautiful campus setting. Social events include a welcome reception at the historic Linné Garden, once cultivated by Linné himself, and a gala dinner at Norrlands Nation, one of Uppsala's vibrant historic student venues.
We look forward to welcoming you to Sweden for an inspiring week of science, dialogue, and connection as we shape the future of weed science together. As usual, EWRS will make financial support available for early-career scientists.
Welcome to Uppsala!
