During February and March 2026, the first cycle of the EWRS webinar series “Question-Driven Weed Science” was held online.
During February and March 2026, the first cycle of the EWRS webinar series “Question-Driven Weed Science”, organized by the Working Group Education and Training with the support of other EWRS working groups, was successfully completed, bringing together researchers from different parts of the world and once again highlighting the importance of a modern, interactive approach to education in weed science. The series was designed based on the specific needs of young researchers, with the aim of addressing topics that are often not covered in standard educational programmes.
The lectures within the series were delivered by Ahmet Uludag, Heinz Mueller-Schaerer, Mostafa Oveisi, Aritz Royo Esnal, Joel Torra Farré, Jordi Recasens Guinjuan, Dana MacGregor, Eric Patterson, Caio Brunharo, Aleksandra Savić, Bàrbara Baraibar Padró, Muthu Bagavathiannan, Guy Coleman and Björn Ringselle, providing participants with insights into the latest concepts, methodologies and technological approaches in this field.
The webinars covered key topics in contemporary weed science, including invasive plant species in the context of climate change, soil seed bank dynamics and early weed growth stages, the application of genomic tools in research, as well as the mechanisms and methods used to study crop–weed competition. Particular attention was also given to the development and application of precision technologies, including sensors, data analytics and artificial intelligence, which are increasingly shaping the future of weed management.
Throughout the entire EWRS webinar series cycle, more than 60 researchers participated, representing over 30 institutions and more than 30 countries across Europe and beyond, including Belgium, Hungary, Greece, Iran, Switzerland, Argentina, Austria, France, India, Latvia, Turkey, Greece, the United Kingdom, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Spain, Jordan, Ireland, Sudan, the Netherlands, the United States of America, Somalia, Slovenia, Germany, Brazil, Italy, Portugal, Chile, Denmark, Finland, Israel, Serbia and Sweden. The diversity of participants further enriched the discussions and enabled the exchange of experiences across different agroecological and research contexts, highlighting the international character and importance of this initiative.
The webinar series was further enriched by the active involvement of EWRS leadership, including Presidents Illias Travlos and Maurizio Vurro. The successful implementation of the series was also supported by the EWRS communication team, including Anna Camila Moonen and Sabine Gennai-Schott, and by Maor Matzrafi. The high level of interest and active participation confirm the success of thisconcept, while the continuation of the webinar series is already planned for autumn 2026.
